Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide an understanding of global animal production, focusing on the role, development, and utilization of food-producing animals. Upon completing the course, students should be able to:

• explain the importance of food-producing animals for sustainable development,
• describe, compare, and explain the role of food-producing animals in different parts of the world,
• describe and critically evaluate various production systems and animal resources in terms of production, sustainable use, and environmental impact,
• provide an overview of how climate, production inputs, market access, international trade, and consumption of animal products affect production opportunities.

Content

The course addresses food-producing animals on a global scale. It integrates breeding, nutrition, management, and market aspects, as well as the impact of the environment on production. Various production systems (including aquaculture) and population structures are analyzed and compared across different regions of the world. The course also explores challenges for sustainable production posed by climate change and reduced land availability.

Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course

Passed written or oral examination. Approved project work and approved participation in compulsory components.

•  If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
