Objectives
The course aims to provide students with an insight into how municipal planning and management can be designed to achieve better sustainable development. Students will obtain the knowledge necessary for furthering the development towards a more resilient society, through planning and management of the urban landscape. In order to be truly stable over time, planning needs to be linked to the management of urban environments. This is addressed during the course. The course applies a theoretical approach to various planning perspectives and analyses the different solutions and their possibilities.
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- reflect and analyse real planning and management situations together with changes in relation to the political, economic, environmental, social and/or technical aspects of social development using an interdisciplinary approach
- propose alternative strategies for the sustainable development of the urban landscape in addition to the real planning and/or management situations studied in the course
- switch between perspectives such as location-specific and general perspectives, as well as those on various scales including local, regional and global arenas in planning and management situations
- describe and apply the basic conditions for Swedish planning and management contexts
- reflect on real planning and management situations using transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, both orally and in writing.
Content
The course addresses urban landscape development drawing on public and private interests, with emphasis on the stakeholders and processes. The course has a global viewpoint together with a global outlook.
Planning and management theories are mixed with local policy documents to enable the study of both collaboration opportunities and conflicts of interest. Students will look at specific cases. Individual actions, such as changes to housing and infrastructure are examined and related to comprehensive challenges such as climate change and international agreements. Both regional and local perspectives are addressed depending on the focus of each case.
The cases are approached in close collaboration with host municipalities and explore the long-term development of a sustainable society with different focus in each of the host municipalities. Current analyses are used to identify landscape-related planning and management challenges, where alternative strategies are created to meet the challenges identified, with emphasis on stakeholders and processes.
Teaching formats
Critical thinking, problem solving, written and oral communication, cooperation and independence are all basic skills that are trained during the course.
Written exercises, seminars, written assignments and presentations are all compulsory. The course also includes literature studies and study visits.
Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
The examination involves an assessment of written assignments, oral presentations and participation in seminars. To pass the course, students must pass the written assignments, presentations and seminar participation requirements. The grading criteria will be specified by the start of the course at the latest.
