Objectives
*In the course, students use their knowledge in business management and agriculture to develop a deeper understanding of economic performance measures for agribusinesses, and develop their skill in planning and analysing farm operations. The students train to become agronomists in the Swedish agricultural sector. *
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- draft an operations plan for an agricultural business,
- suggest an optimized production based on economic modelling,
- prepare contribution margin calculations for different kinds of Swedish farm productions,
- apply their knowledge of budget monitoring, financial statement analysis and business valuation on a farm business,
- know and apply taxation laws of major importance for the agricultural sector,
- recognize the economic considerations needed when farm businesses shift hands,
- acknowledge the importance of subsidizes from the EU in planning a farm operation,
- apply industry specific key performance indicators for Swedish agriculture.
Content
Subject-related content
In the course, students will integrate knowledge in Business Management with knowledge in Swedish agronomy and husbandry, in order to make qualified assessment on farm management. In actual cases students will practice their analytical skills, and under supervision get a chance to train their professional abilities.
*Teaching formats *
To further student learning and promote discussion, a variety of methods are used, such as: lectures, exercises, study visits, project work, and presentations.
The course focuses on the following generic skills:
Problem solving, communicating economic data both orally and in written form, and teamwork.
The following components are compulsory:
Active participation in project assignments.
Active participation in field trips.
Collaboration with the surrounding community takes place through assignments/cases from real farms.
