Course description
The course includes the following elements:
Operations analysis with transport and network optimization, location theory, inventory optimization, queuing theory and integer programming, Transport technology, Material flows and transport in a business perspective, Analysis and planning of society's transport system, The transport network of the future.
Entry Requirements
- 120 credits in Technology/Technique and/or Natural Science, including at least 30 credits in Technology/Technique and 5 credits Statistics.
- English 5 from Swedish upper secondary school, and Swedish corresponding to the requirement for basic eligibility for Swedish higher education at first level

Objectives
The purpose of the course is to provide deeper knowledge in analysis and optimisation of logistic systems.
On competion of the course the student should be able to
- describe and explain fundamental concepts in logistics and supply chain management
- explain and apply commonly used algorithms and methods to logistics-related problems
- analyse and solve logistical problems using operational analysis methods, such as linear programming, integer programming, and common deterministic and stochastic models
- perform an analysis of logistics-related issues within companies and operations
- plan an applied logistics development project based on independent studies and observations.
Content
Subject content
The course includes the following parts:
Operational analysis with algorithms and computer-based solution methods to operational analytical problems:
The transportation algorithm
Network theory
Localisation theory
Project planning theory
Inventory theory
Queue theory
Computer based solutions of linear optimisation problems with applications including the energy sector
Integer programming including binary and mixed problems
Fundamental concepts in logistics and supply chain management
Independent information collection and analysis of a logistics-related activity
Review of other students' problem solving and analysis.
Learning activities
The course uses different teaching methods to promote students' learning and discussions through:
- operational analysis is covered in lectures, computer labs and exercises
- logistics and supply chain management is covered in lectures and in a project assignment, where project proposals are developed based on a combination of seminars, literature studies, interviews and own observations (e.g. study visits).
The course focuses on the following general competencies:
- critical thinking
- problem solving
- independent work
- planning/management of time constraints
The following activities are compulsory:
- Introduction, seminars and presentation of the project.
- Written examination
Collaboration with the surrounding society takes place through seminars with invited experts and study visits or interviews with companies and organisations
Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
Approved witten and oral presentation of the project assignment, approved participation in compulsory activities and passed written examination.
