Objectives
The objectives of the course are to understand, analyze and evaluate the aesthetic, technical and economic conditions of various construction materials from a user perspective.
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
- explain the architectural possibilities and limitations of various construction materials
- describe how the characteristics of these materials are affected by manufacturing, subsequent handling and construction
- explain the durability and lifetime of different combinations of materials in different environments
- draw up basic plans through their understanding of the construction characteristics of various materials
- recognise the environmental and economic consequences of different solutions in the short and long term
- accomplish highly legible drawings of buildable constructions and construction details.
Content
The course provides knowledge of the properties of construction materials and their applications in outdoor environments. Natural stone, wood, metal and concrete are treated in detail, while other materials are touched upon more briefly.
The course provides training in observing the nature of the materials and how they vary with processing and interaction with other materials, as well as how this is expressed in constructions. Through workshops, the student embodies their knowledge of the materials characters and properties. In connection with these workshops, skills in drawing techniques are also developed.
Visits are made to workplaces in order to study how certain materials are manufactured, processed and handled. Furthermore, the materials' environmental impact and maintenance requirements are studied.
The course contains a project part where the knowledge of the materials is applied in a design assignment.
Teaching formats:
To further student learning and promote discussion, a variety of methods are used: Lectures, workshops, study visits, project work.
The course focuses on the following generic competencies:
problem solving, use of technology, visual communication, creativity.
Collaboration with the surrounding community takes place through stude visits.
The course contains compulsory assignments and a grade-based compulsory project work.
Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
Assessment and pass grade in individual tasks specified at the start of the course. Participation in compulsory moments.
