Objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the student knowledge of how disease can arise and spread in the animal and the environment. The course provides basic knowledge of how diseases can arise, be diagnosed and prevented. The course also gives an insight into the spread of infectious diseases.
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to
- describe at a general level microorganisms of significance within animal health care, their prevalence, their living conditions and transferability,
- explain principles and measures to prevent the spread of infection by important disease-causing microorganisms,
- briefly describe commonly used diagnostic methods in microbiology,
- handle a microscope and in a correct sterile manner, perform basic microbiological examinations and be able to interpret the result,
- describe the main causes (aetiologies) of diseases in animals,
- describe immunological mechanisms of importance in infection, allergy, autoimmunity and vaccination,
- describe basic pathophysiological processes in inflammation, cell injury, wound healing, tumors and circulatory disorders, with the use of mainly correct nomenclature.
Content

Lectures cover basic microbiology, infectious disease transmission, pathology, immunology, autoimmune diseases, allergic reactions and principles of vaccination, as well as demonstration of necropsy material (organs). Trough compulsory labs, students perform basic microbiological investigations and practice interpretation of results. The course also include microscopy training.
