Pomology - cultivation, propagation and plant protection
Course description
This distance course is aimed at those who want to learn more about fruit growing in Sweden, with a focus on the spring aspects of fruit cultivation – from cultivation and pruning to propagation, plant protection, and practical plant breeding.
Fruit cultivation is important from a Swedish horticultural perspective and has deep roots in our cultural history. This course introduces the theoretical and practical foundations of fruit cultivation in Sweden. During the course, you will learn about which factors affect the establishment and management of fruit cultivation, basic principles of pruning, and common propagation techniques. You will practice identifying the most common diseases and damages to fruit trees and propose measures. The course also includes an introduction to practical plant breeding.
The subject of pomology is divided into two sister courses, with one course offered in the autumn and the other in the spring. The idea is that you should be able to follow the value chain for Swedish-produced fruit over a year. However, the courses can be taken in any order. Both courses include evening lectures and coursework within one of the course themes.
