Pomology - harvest, post harvest and plant breeding
Course description
This distance course is aimed at those who want to learn more about fruit cultivation in Sweden, with a focus on the harvesting aspects of fruit cultivation - from fruit identification, fruit ripening, and storage to processing and marketing.
Fruit cultivation is important from a Swedish horticultural perspective and has deep roots in our cultural history. This course introduces the theoretical and practical foundations of fruit cultivation in Sweden. During the course, you will learn to identify different fruit cultivars, how the breeding of cultivars is carried out and how this work is affected by climate change, how fruit quality and nutritional content affect consumption and product processing, as well as which factors influence fruit quality at harvest and storage.
The subject of pomology is divided into two sister courses, with one course offered in the autumn and the other in the spring. The idea is that you should be able to follow the value chain for Swedish-produced fruit over a year. However, the courses can be taken in any order. Both courses include evening lectures and coursework within one of the course themes.
