Course description
This is the first course in the master’s program Industrial Wood Supply Mangement. It focuses on the properties of forest-based biomass materials for processing based on end-user requirements. The course covers traditional forest industrial products as well as various types of future products, in the form of e.g. fuels and refined products. The course content provides the students with knowledge of processing technology and in-depth understanding of the role of raw material properties in forest industrial supply.
The course can mostly be completed on distance, but has a compulsory meeting during one week in Umeå. All other teaching also takes place from the campus in Umeå, where infrastructure is provided for students who are physically present.

Objectives
The course aims to give students in-depth knowledge on the properties of forest-based biomass materials for processing based on end-user requirements.
After completing the course, the student should be able to
- describe and analyse forest industrial processes (sawmills and pulp/paper) taking into account the heterogeneity of raw materials
- describe and analyse industrial processes with regard to the heterogeneity of the raw material within the processing areas of solid, liquid and gaseous fuels as well as new biorefinery products
- obtain relevant information, describe and analyse a subject area within the chain product requirements-processing technology-raw material and present their material in both written and oral form in a correct and clear manner
- account for and evaluate the connection between the properties of the raw material, the refining process and the final product
- Independently synthesize acquired knowledge to make an assessment of future applications regarding the use of both forest and other biomass raw materials.
Content
Included subject areas are technology, bioenergy and wood science. The course covers traditional forest industrial products as well as various types of future products, in the form of e.g. fuels and refined products. The focus is primarily on wood-based products and pulp/paper but energy and other products from forests as well as by-products and other biomass raw materials are also included.
The course uses different teaching methods to promote the students' learning and discussions through lectures, several of which are by business representatives, seminars, laboratories and study visits. In addition to theory and laboratories, the students carry out independent work on the connection between products and raw material requirements.
The course focus on the following general skills: Problem solving, oral communication, written communication, collaboration, time planning/managing time frames
The following elements are compulsory: Laboratories, exercises, as well as some seminars and study visits. Physical necessity during a shorter continuous period for laboratories and study visits.
Cooperation with the surrounding society takes place through working life/professional connection in program/course development together with an external program council of employer representatives, as well as through study visits and guest lectures.
