Objectives

The aim of the course is to make the student familiar with the practical parts that are included in the work of a veterinary nurse in an animal hospital/clinic.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• perform elements of a hygienic nature that will prevent infection and disease transmission,
• use appropriate techniques at the medication, handling and feeding of animals,
• assist at treatments,
• apply appropriate perioperative care, techniques in anaesthesia and operating theatre routines,
• use conventional technology and existing equipment within image diagnostics,
• use appropriate sampling techniques and perform basic conventional laboratory analyses,
• use conventional practices for record keeping and other documentation,
• critically discuss clinical work in relation to scientific and practically proven experience,
• demonstrate clinical reasoning and critical thinking regarding the handling and care of patients.

Content

Subject-related content

Working methods, environments and medical issues are highlighted from a nursing perspective. This takes place via practical skills training at animal hospitals and clinics as well as through an individual presentation. The practical elements give the student the opportunity to apply, understand and be able to explain theoretical knowledge in veterinary medicine and animal nursing.

The individual presentation gives the student the opportunity to theorize, deepen and plan for the practical elements included in the course, including sustainability aspects in animal care. The individual presentation also provides the opportunity for reflection and understanding of documentation and planning for the individual animal's recovery as well as the opportunity for personal development of the student's communicative and informative skills.

Teaching formats

To further student learning and promote discussion, a variety of methods are used, such as skills training of practical elements, assignments and exercises.

The course focuses on the following generic competencies

Information literacy, critical thinking, problem solving, scientific methods, digital skills, technology use, written and oral communication, collaboration, time management/managing time frames, independence.

The following elements are compulsory

Skills training of practical elements and certain assignments.

Discontinued practice: A student may receive a fail grade and be stopped from participating in the practical training with living animals if there is a tangible risk that the student, through severe incompetence, could injure animals, other persons, themselves, or valuable property if they continued to participate in the practical training. An individual action plan will be prescribed for the student and served to them in writing. The plan will be established by the department responsible for the course after consultation with a study counselor and the student concerned. This plan, which is decided by the programme director of studies, should indicate which deficiencies in knowledge and skills the student has, which kind of support the student can receive from the department, and when a control can take place that the deficiencies have been resolved. The plan will also specify how this control will be carried out. Each student has the right to a maximum of two control occasions, but no more than one per year. The student may not take part in practical training with living animals until the programme director of studies has controlled and confirmed that the student has the knowledge and skills that are required.

The entry requirement of 7,5 credits clinical training of veterinary nursing skills may be fulfilled through completed course Clinical training of veterinary nursing skills (DO0097/DO0119/DO0126/DO0154).

The entry requirement of 7 credits infection prevention and control may be fulfilled through completed course Infection prevention and control (DO0084, DO0094, DO0099, DO0118, DO0124/DO0127/DO0155).
