Objectives

The course provides basic knowledge in extension services and socially sustainable leadership. This prepares the student for a future role as a leader and advisor in their field.

After completing the course, the student should be able to

• describe and explain how socially sustainable leadership can be applied

• describe and explain how a company or an organization can be organized to meet the requirements of social sustainability

• describe and explain how leadership and organization can influence behaviour to achieve socially sustainable goals

• describe and explain how socially sustainable extension services can be applied within one's own specialist area

Content

The course includes

• the basics of leadership

• group dynamics and forms of cooperation

• change and conflict

• organizational theory

• influence behaviour through leadership and organization

• social sustainability, definition and application

• communicative strategies and methods within extension services

The course gives the student, in addition to subject knowledge, increased self-awareness by exploring their own approach to leadership, counselling, collaboration and relationships.

The student is given the opportunity to study various applications of leadership and counselling linked to their own specialist area and possible future career choices.

The course uses different teaching methods to promote the students' learning through lectures, discussions, presentations, exercises and case studies in groups, seminars, role-plays, individual work and reading of literature.

The course focuses on the following general skills:

•Critical thinking

•Problem solving

•Oral communication

•Written communication

•Cooperation

•Creativity

The following sections are mandatory:

• Guest lectures may be compulsory

• Case study in groups, implementation and reporting (project work)

• Any study visits

• Assignments, individual and in groups (examination)

Collaboration with the surrounding community takes place through a case study that is carried out in groups. The students' own experiences from different workplaces are used in the teaching.

Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course

For an approved course the following is required: • Approved mandatory submissions • Approved case study report (group examination) • Approved participation in mandatory sections

•  If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
