Objectives
The course aims first at providing basic knowledge about weeds, plant diseases and pests in arable crops, and second at integrating this knowledge with other factors influencing the conditions for crop production in agriculture. Upon completion of the course the student should be able to: -identify the most important insect pests and plant diseases in Swedish agriculture
- account for the most important weeds, insect pests and plant diseases in Swedish agriculture, and explain their biology, effects on crops and how they can be controlled.
- explain the distribution and population development insect pests, plant diseases and weeds, and relate this to factors such as climate, cultivation techniques and other organisms in the farming landscape.
- account for control methods to reduce problems with animal pests, plant diseases and weeds, and discuss their importance in sustainable agricultural development.
- analyse and discuss the conditions for sustainable crop production at farm level.
- search and evaluate information within the subject area and present this information both in written and oral form.
Content
The course addresses crop protection in agricultural crops, and the conditions for crop production at farm level. The crop protection parts cover weeds, plant diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses and nematodes, as well as damage caused by insects and other animal pests. The course includes the identification of insects based on collected or preserved specimens and the diagnosis of damage caused by plant pathogens and pests. Based on the biology and ecology of weeds, pathogens and pests, preventive and direct countermeasures, as well as long-term control strategies are discussed. Through an in depth project assignment, different components of crop production is evaluated at farm level. The course includes compulsory laboratory exercises, assignments, seminar work and study visits.
Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
Approved oral or written examinations and approved laboratory and exercise reports. Approved participation in compulsory elements. Identification of insects is examined separately in a practical examination.
