Monitoring of agricultural catchments

The aim of the monitoring programme is to monitor pesticide levels in surface water and groundwater over the long term, and to investigate the presence of pesticides in sediment, air and precipitation.

The environmental monitoring of pesticides started in 2002 and is mainly carried out in four small catchment areas, each representing an agricultural region in Sweden. In each type area, surface water and sediment, from the stream draining the area, and groundwater are sampled from a depth of approximately 3-6 metres. Farmers in the type areas are interviewed each year to collect data on the crops grown and the pesticides used.

Environmental monitoring also includes two slightly larger rivers in Skåne (Skivarpsån and Vege å) where surface water and sediment are sampled.

Pesticides from rainwater and air have been collected in Skåne since 2002 and 2009 respectively. Since 2009, one additional rainwater collection site has been used, until 2016 in Aspvreten, Södermanland and thereafter Norunda, Uppland.
