Register for the course at SLU only
Self-registration for the course is done in SLU's Ladok between 2026-01-22 – 2026-02-05. Remember that you must be admitted and registered in Ladok to be able take the course. Having access to Canvas does not mean you are registered in the course and without registration, you are risking losing your place in the course. If you have been admitted to the course with conditions, you need to send your credit list to the course leader who will review it and decide if you can register. Do this as soon as possible as reviewing credits may take a few days due to the course start.
If you need special support, please inform the course leader or student administration at the start of the course so that special arrangements can be made, for example for examination. Certificates from Nais must be presented with information about the support recommended for you. More information can be found here.

Objectives
The aim of this course is to give students advanced practice of how to conduct empirical economic research. After having taken the course, students should have an advanced understanding of causal inference, and be able to compare, implement and interpret different methods used to estimate causal effects.
Content
The course will cover multivariate regression, nonlinear regression, panel data, instrumental variables, regression discontinuity designs, and differences between experimental and quasi-experimental methods. The course will also cover ways to deal with econometric problems which often arise in applied work, such as missing values, multiple outcomes, non-random samples and outliers. The course will also discuss different philosophies and approaches to causal inference, including the potential outcomes framework, reduced form estimation and structural estimation. The course will cover basic to advanced statistical programming.
