Objectives
The purpose of the course is to provide knowledge needed for the role of cultivation manager in various types of companies and visitor facilities in horticulture.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- draw up and assess a business plan based on a business idea, a market-oriented approach, basic strategic perspectives, business models and financial management tools.
- explain and apply basic theories of leadership and organization with an emphasis on how groups function.
- explain cultivation-related concepts and phenomena.
- plan a cultivation based on geographical location, sales channel, company size, technical standard and cultivation safety.
- analyze cultivation technology problems and evaluate, present and apply cultivation technology information.
Content
Subject-related content:
The course includes the establishment of a business plan, leadership and organization, production of fruit and vegetables as well as ornamental plants, where cultivation is carried out in horticulture companies with open field, greenhouse and/or nursery areas. The course covers cultivation methods for commonly occurring garden crops. The product, in this case the item presented on the market, is followed up to a possible storage/customer.
Particular importance is attached to the following aspects:
- application of a market-oriented approach
- application of basic strategic perspectives
- application of business administrations models
- application of various financial management tools in a business plan
- group dynamics and leadership
- analysis of cultivation conditions
- control of climate, irrigation and plant nutrient supply
- selection of plant nutrient sources
- selection of energy sources
- greenhouses, warehouses and other economic buildings
- logistics and work organization
- machine chains
- storage capacity and durability

The examination consists of written and oral exams and presentation of group work and exercises. For a passed course, passed exams and submissions as well as passed participation in mandatory sections are required.
