Near misses and accidents

Everyone at SLU, including students, needs to contribute to a good and safe work environment. To prevent accidents and injuries, it is important to:

• follow instructions;
• use protective equipment;
• point out shortcomings in the work environment, either directly to the course coordinator or when filling in the course evaluation.

If you think the work environment can be improved, talk to the course coordinator. You can also describe any shortcomings in the course evaluation. If you feel your concerns are not being taken seriously at your department, or if the matter relates to broader issues such as shared teaching facilities, you can contact the student safety representative for your course or programme.

What if there is an accident on campus?

If an accident occurs in class, you should report it to the teacher responsible for that course component, as well as in SLU's incident reporting system (IA system). It is also important to report near misses – a dangerous situation that could have led to an accident. SLU uses these reports in its preventive work environment management. Read more about the IA system.

Reporting accidents and near misses in the IA app

The IA app has a simplified reporting feature. The app is available for iOS, Android and Windows Phone.

It has an offline mode, allowing you to report an event even without a connection. As soon as you reconnect to the internet, the report is sent to the IA system.

Accident insurance for students

Students are insured in the event of an accident during class or during direct travel between their home and the university. You must be registered in Ladok to be covered by the insurance. Read more about student insurance.

Social environment

We are each other's study and work environment. It is important to respect other students and teachers even if they do not share your opinions. Problems in the social environment can be brought to the attention of teachers if it is a department-wide problem. You can also report these problems as a risk observation in the IA system. Feel free to ask your study counsellor for help. The student welfare groups at each campus also work to ensure a positive social study environment across SLU’s programmes and courses.

Stress and high performance requirements can create a negative study environment. The Student Health Service offers advice and arranges courses in, for example, stress management.  

What does SLU do?

SLU is committed to an inclusive work environment – this includes the work environment, equal opportunities and gender equality.

Work is done at the local level through the departmental inclusive work environment committees (LIAs) and the four inclusive work environment committees at the faculties (FIAs).

At the university level, there is the SLU committee for an inclusive work environment (KIA). The KIA is chaired by the vice-chancellor and includes the chairs of the four faculty committees.

Every year, SLU offers training for the students’ unions' student safety representatives; the training covers the most important aspects of the work environment legislation and the tasks of student safety representatives.

What does the law say?

The Work Environment Act also applies to students. The law applies to the physical, digital, organisational and social work environments. The university is required to take measures to prevent ill health and accidents, instruct students and staff to avoid risks, maintain premises, machinery and protective equipment and investigate occupational injuries.

SLU is also required to conduct systematic work environment management in collaboration with student safety representatives, employee safety representatives, students’ unions and trade unions.
