Scholarships
Scholarships are available for fee-paying students admitted to Bachelor’s and Master's programmes.
Scholarships offered by SLU
SLU offers a small number of scholarships each year. Out of hundreds of applicants, only a few are selected as recipients. This means there is a high competition and that the applicant needs both very good grades and a well-written motivation letter.
Who can apply?
Scholarships are available for fee-paying students admitted to Bachelor’s and Master's programmes.
SLU accepts scholarship applications for the Bachelor’s programme Forest and Landscape and to all Master’s programmes at SLU except the following:
- Outdoor Environments for Health and Well-Being
- Erasmus Mundus Plant Breeding (EmPLANT+)
- European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (EMABG)
- EnvEuro
- Sustainable Development
A scholarship offered by SLU covers tuition fees only, no living or travel expenses are included.
You need to pay the application fee even if you apply for a scholarship.
All fee-paying students, including scholarship recipients, are also covered by comprehensive medical insurance through Kammarkollegiet FAS+ during the entire study period. You can read the full terms of the insurance on Kammarkollegiet’s website.
How to apply
All students who apply for an SLU Master’s programme or our Bachelor’s programme Forest and Landscape as their first choice by the 3 February 2025 deadline, will receive instructions on how to apply for a full tuition waiver scholarship.
The instructions will be sent to all applicants who have paid the application fee at the beginning of February. It is not possible to have the application fee waived. The deadline for scholarship applications is 28 February 2025. You will be notified in the middle of April.
You must be able to support yourself financially for your residence permit.
You must demonstrate to the Swedish Migration Agency that you have secured sufficient financial support for the entire period covered by your residence permit application.
For applications received on or after 1 January 2025, the living expense requirement is at least SEK 10,584 per month.
This means you must provide evidence of available funds, such as personal bank assets.
If the Migration Agency denies your application for a residence permit, you will lose your scholarship.
Selection process
The selection process is based on a combined assessment of the applicant's motivation letter and previous university grades. No CV or reference letters are required. Only about 1 per cent of applicants are awarded the scholarship.
Since international payments can take over a month to process, please pay your tuition fee even if you have applied for a scholarship. If you are granted a scholarship from SLU or SI, you can apply for a refund.
Scholarships offered by the Swedish Institute
The Swedish Institute (SI), a government agency, has a number of scholarships open for students from countries outside the EU/EEA. Depending on your nationality and field of study, you may be eligible to apply. The SI scholarships cover both tuition fees and living expenses, to the amount of SEK 12,000/month for studies at Master's level. A travel grant is also issued to successful applicants.
The scholarship application period is from the middle to the end of February 2025. Please note that you must have submitted an application for a Master's programme in Sweden at universityadmissions.se before applying for an SI Scholarship.
More information about the scholarships can be found at Swedish Institute website.
