Paying tuition fees

Deadlines and frequently asked questions

Once you are admitted to a Master’s or Bachelor’s programme at SLU, vist the information page about student IT accounts to create an account. You can find payment instructions and confirmation of payment in Ladok Student.

This amount covers tuition for the first semester. The instalment must be paid in full and received by SLU no later than 9 May 2025 – you cannot spread the payment over the semester. It usually takes a couple of weeks for the payment to reach SLU after you have made it. The deadline cannot be extended due to Swedish Migration Agency regulations. If you have scholarships other than those from SLU or SI, your fees must still reach SLU by 9 May 2025. Once you have paid your first instalment and received a confirmation email from SLU, you can apply for a residence permit from the Swedish Migration Agency.

When making your payment to SLU, please keep in mind that reimbursements can only be made to the original account used for payment. Therefore, we recommend using a payment method that allows refunds to ensure a smooth reimbursement process if needed. Make sure to read our refund policy, which outlines the conditions under which refunds can be made.

The application for a residence permit for studies will not be processed if the first instalment of the tuition fee has not been paid. The application process for a residence permit can take up to 4 months.

You do not need to send in a payment receipt to SLU.

Deadlines for payment received by SLU for each semester

First semester - autumn 2025: 9 May 2025 (academic year 2025/2026)
Second semester - spring 2026: 15 December 2025
Third semester - autumn 2026: 1 August 2025
Fourth semester - spring 2027 - 15 December 2026

If the first payment for your programme has not reached SLU by 9 May, you will lose your place on the programme. If you have studied at least one semester on your programme, SLU must have received your tuition fee for the semester before you can start your studies.

If you cannot pay your fees

If you have already started a programme but cannot pay the tuition fee for an upcoming semester, you will not be allowed to begin your studies for that semester. The full tuition fee must be paid before you can start your studies; partial payment is not accepted, and you cannot begin studying just the first course. If SLU has not received your fee by the middle of the semester, you will be suspended from studies.

SLU has no scholarships for students already studying a programme, or other ways of helping students who cannot pay their tuition fees.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay the tuition fee for the first semester after 9 May 2025?
No. 9 May is the absolute last day the SLU can receive the fee for you to have a chance to be granted a residence permit in time.

If SLU has not received your payment by 9 May 2025, you will lose your place on the programme. It is not possible to extend this deadline. You can only apply for a residence permit after you have paid your fee. Please pay the fee as soon as possible to be granted a residence permit in time.

How long does it take for the fee to reach SLU?
The transfer time varies greatly depending on the transfer route. Payments made from within Sweden usually take up to a couple of days. International payments usually take a couple of weeks, but may take over a month. Please pay the tuition fee as soon as possible to ensure that it arrives in time.

Is it possible to pay the tuition fee without making a bank transaction?
The transaction can be made by others, such as an online payment service. Please note that if you need your fee to be refunded, we can only make the refund to the same account the payment was made from. If you use an online payment service, you have to collect the fee yourself in case of a refund.

You cannot pay the fee using credit cards or bitcoin.

Can someone else pay the tuition fee for me?
Yes, anyone can make the payment. Make sure that your name and birthdate are included in the reference. Please note that if you need your fee to be refunded, we can only make the refund to the same account the payment was made from.

Can I pay the fee in other currencies than SEK?
You are welcome to pay the fee in other currencies, such as US dollar, Euro or British pounds. SLU cannot tell you the tuition fee in other currencies than SEK. You can find the current exchange rate at your bank, or by some other means.

I cannot pay the fee for my first semester before the deadline, can you keep my place until next year?
You can only defer your studies if you have paid your fee and you have a special reason you cannot start this year. SLU will then keep your tuition fee until next year.

I have paid my tuition fee, what do I do now?
Wait for the confirmation email from SLU. You do not have to send in your payment receipt to SLU. Apply for a residence permit immediately after you have received the confirmation email from SLU. You can read more about the process in the checklist for international students.

The status on University Admissions still says I have to pay the fee, but I have received a confirmation email from SLU?
The status on University Admissions will not change, even after the tuition fee has been paid. The status on University Admissions indicates that you are a fee paying student.

Paying tuition fees to SLU

  1. If you are a Master’s student, you will receive your notification of selection results for the 2025/2026 academic year on 27 March. If you are a Bachelor’s student, you will receive your notification on 3 April.

Please note that your notification will be published in PDF format on universityadmissions.se.

  2. Create an SLU student IT account.

    - Your student account gives you access to the Ladok student registry.
    - Check whether your tuition fee payment instructions are available in Ladok Student. If they are not, contact tuition fees.
    - You will find your invoice and payment confirmation for each semester in Ladok Student. Make sure to check your inbox.

A few days after you have been sent your notification, you will receive payment instructions to the email address registered with universityadmissions.se under ‘My Pages/Log In’. You will be emailed a confirmation of payment from tuitionfees@slu.se. Make sure to monitor your inbox.

  3. Tuition fees must be received and confirmed by SLU no later than 9 May 2025. It is important to plan your payment carefully, as the full amount for the first semester must be paid in one transaction.

The time required for international bank transfers can vary depending on factors such as the banks involved, transfer method, currency, regulatory compliance, and intermediary banks.

Payments cannot be made in instalments, and there are no exceptions. This also applies to tuition fees for subsequent semesters. Please keep your transaction receipt as proof of payment.

SLU can only refund tuition fees to the account from which the original payment was made. To avoid issues with refunds, we strongly recommend paying from an account in your own name.

  4. Once Ladok shows that your payment has reached SLU, you must immediately apply for your residence permit from the Swedish Migration Agency. Please note that this is a separate process that SLU cannot influence in any way, and we cannot answer any questions about the immigration process or residence permits.

Once the Migration Agency has received your application, it takes around four months before you receive a decision. Read more about processing times . There is also a web page with answers to frequently asked questions.

There are also details on how to increase your chances of receiving a residence permit in time.

The Migration Agency will send your residence permit (UT) card to the Swedish embassy or consulate. In some cases, you will need to collect the card in person. You will need your UT card to be able to enter Sweden as a student.

  5. The most common problem students experience are related to the residence permit application. SLU cannot assist in application for a residence permit or D visa.

  6. If you are not granted a residence permit in time, you can apply to defer your studies or to have your tuition fees refunded.
