Cemetery Architecture - Meaning making Intentions, Needs and Experiences

An interdisciplinary project that aims to discern place making strategies and meaning making functions in relation to contemporary Swedish cemeteries

We explore the cemetery as a materialisation of cultural, social and individual processes of change through, a) exploring place making processes in the planning, design and construction of cemeteries, b) studying cemetery behaviour in terms of how individuals make use of the cemetery as a place for memorialisation and meaning making. The work draws on urban spatial and sociological theory as well as on a phenomenological and psychological approach.
