History and Cultural Heritage

Last changed: 26 October 2014

History and Cultural Heritage carries out research and academic education at all levels within the field of history and cultural heritage of gardens, parks and landscapes. The historical perspective on human use and relations to nature, landscape and plants is the focus of our work.

We deal with questions concerning cities, cultivated landscapes, gardens, parks and deer parks, where people use and manage their environment. These places provide interfaces for questions regarding nature and culture, the role of the garden, the use of cultivated plants, and the landscape as cultural heritage. Our work include studies of the cultivation of plants, their change and adaptation. We maintain and document our horticultural plant heritage, and conserve it in the Swedish national gene bank for the future.

History and Cultural Heritage is inter- and multidisciplinary and incorporates social science, humanistic and natural sciences. Our field of knowledge and expertise are primarily landscape architecture with focus on cultural heritage studies, garden history, agrarian history, art history, gender studies, history of science and ideas, as well as horticultural science with focus on botany, plant biology, cultivated diversity, plant genetic resources, gene bank management and the historical assortment of garden plants.
