Forest, forest sector and sustainable development

The course provides an introduction to forests, forestry and sustainable development. The role of the forest sector in a bio-based society is highlighted and value chains from the plantation of new forest to a finished product or ecosystem service are described.

The course includes lectures excursions and study visits that together with the students own work, individually and in study groups provide a basic understanding of the sustainable use of the forest resource. Economic, social and ecological sustainability are highlighted. The course is based on the Swedish forest sector with international comparisons and reflections.

The forest sector comprises a wide range of actors such as representatives of the forest industry, forest companies, individual forest owners, state and municipal authorities, certification organizations and associations that, for example, engage in nature conservation or outdoor recreation. The students are given an overview and get acquainted with how different actors work.

The course also provides basic knowledge about the forest and the use of the forest. The students are trained in reading and understanding scientific articles and writing texts with scientific and factual content.
