Björn Vinnerås is a professor of Environmental Engineering since 1 July 2018. His inauguration lecture has the title "Technology for safe nutrient recycling".

Björn Vinnerås's research field is environmental engineering, with a focus on developing technologies to recycle plant nutrients from the city back to agricultural fields in an efficient and safe way. He does this within three main areas: hygienisation to prevent the spread of infection, the use of waste for production of protein-rich animal feed and source separating sanitation. An important ambition is that his research will lead to solutions that can be applied in practice.

One of Björn Vinnerås’ projects involves composting food waste with the help of fly larvae, which can then be used as protein feed for animals. The species used is the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens), and in the net cages the flies lay eggs that are used to produce new larvae. Photo: Göran Ekeberg.
