Johan Lundqvist is a professor of toxicology since 1 December 2024. His inauguration lecture has the title "Kanariefågeln i gruvan 2.0 – ett nytt varningssystem för hälsofarliga ämnen".

Johan Lundqvist develops methods and strategies to rapidly detect hazardous chemical contaminants in drinking water. His methods are based on mammalian cells that are cultured in the laboratory and used as sensors to detect toxic substances in the water samples. The great strength of these methods is that they measure the total toxicity of analysed samples and thus take into account both known and unknown substances as well as the mixture effects that can occur when we are exposed to many substances at the same time.
