Biodiversity and the role of forests in climate change are now key social issues that require more knowledge. In order to both sustainably use and safeguard forest biodiversity, a coherent basic science research program is needed that addresses large and complex issues and develops new analytical tools. That’s why the WIFORCE Research School, part of the Wallenberg Initiatives in Forest Research (www.slu.se/en/wiforce), was created.

The PhD student will be employed at The Department of Forest ecology and management. The department includes about 115 people of which 9 are professors. Our mission is to advance the understanding of forest ecosystems and how these should be managed today and in the future.

Description:

The PhD student will join the broader WIFORCE initiative aimed at improving how biodiversity in forested peatlands and riparian zones are considered within managed boreal forest landscapes. Currently, research in the lab examines how forest management influences waterways, wetlands, and their surrounding ecosystems, working with hydrology, nutrient transport, biodiversity conservation, and riparian buffer management, combining long-term ecological data with applied field studies and experiments. This has included analyses of historic drainage and restoration efforts as well as assessments of ongoing forestry impacts on water quality and habitats. Together with collaborators, the aim is to generate practical, science-based insights that support more sustainable and ecologically robust forest and water management.  

The PhD student will have the freedom to co-design their project that explores questions related to, but not necessarily limited to:

  • Understanding how endangered species and sensitive biotopes in wet, but forested, environments can be identified and effectively protected under production-oriented forestry.
  • Developing practical approaches for integrating riparian or peatland ecosystems into forest management, strengthening nature conservation, and guiding habitat restoration.
  • Investigating the ecological role of small streams, ditches, and modified waterways in the boreal forest landscape and how this interacts with forest management.
  • Experimenting with alternative forest management practices in riparian zones and/or peatlands and their consequences for biodiversity, water quality, and forest production and regeneration.
  • Following-up effects of ditch management treatments (cleaning vs. left alone) performed 5 years ago, with a focus on instream organisms (i.e. macroinvertebrates).
  • Measuring and evaluating response of vegetation and soil to peatland rewetting (ditch blocking).  

The student is highly encouraged to leverage a number of experimental and long-term research infrastructures, including nearly 100 sites along a longitudinal gradient of Sweden (see recent paper using this study system here), riparian buffer management experiments (Blue Leads Green Project & MUST DEFINE), a ditch blocking/restoration/cleaning experiment  (Trollberget Experimental Area), as well as the long-term research at the Krycklan Catchment Study. There is also the opportunity to complement these infrastructures with new sites, if time and funding permits.

Research Environment: The successful candidate will join a diverse, collaborative, and inclusive research team with expertise in forest and aquatic ecology, forest management, and environmental monitoring.  The main supervisor of the student will be Associate Professor (Universitetslektor) Eliza Maher Hasselquist, with co-supervision by Lenka Kuglerová. The primary language we work in is English, but learning Swedish is encouraged to participate in outreach and stakeholder events. The position includes a competitive salary and full benefits – including generous vacation time and parental leave (>1 year).

Qualifications:

The candidate must have:

  • A Master’s degree in ecology, forestry, environmental science, or a related field, or at least 240 credits, of which a minimum of 60 credits are from second-cycle courses;
  • Fulfill English language requirements: For students from Swedish upper secondary schools, this is English B/English 6. Alternatively, applicants must hold an internationally recognized English language qualification (TOEFL, IELTS, and Cambridge ESOL). More information is available on universityadmissions.se.);
  • A valid driver’s license
  • The possibility to do extensive field work in remote locations. The position is based in Umeå, Sweden, but there is a requirement that the student will be able to travel and be away from Umeå for up to one month at a time doing field work in middle/southern Sweden and potentially other locations (> 8 hours drive from Umeå).

Other meriting qualifications are:

  • Strong quantitative skills, with experience in statistical modeling or spatial data analysis in R and/or python.
  • Familiarity with biodiversity assessments, aquatic ecology, boreal forest ecology, and forest management.
  • Ability to work both independently and in collaborative teams.
  • Field work experience
  • A passion for science and a positive attitude.
