Water for Climate Action
The world’s climate is heating and deteriorating faster than previously expected. The linked emergencies of climate, environment and biodiversity are becoming more urgent, with far-reaching consequences for all aspects of life on earth.
As organiser of World Water Week, SIWI (Stockholm International Water Institute) believes that water professionals have a crucial role to play in the global effort to stop global heating and to stabilize the global climate while achieving equitable and sustainable development for all. Not only is water the main medium through which global heating impacts human society, but it is also a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and to carbon storage at the global scale. From both those viewpoints, improved water management is a tool to help policy makers achieve their climate aims.
World Water Week 2025 focuses on addressing these linked emergencies, emphasizing both mitigation and adaptation alongside the broader goal of enhancing resilience. The 5-day event will explore the entire water cycle, from freshwater to oceans, and highlight the importance of protecting natural ecosystems that are essential for climate stability and biodiversity. Equity and climate justice will be central to the discussions, ensuring that
vulnerable communities are not left behind in the global response to climate change.
