Worth Knowing: Streams and rivers – why are they so important, how did they get so degraded, and what can we do to fix them up?
Welcome to a popular science lunch lecture where professor of freshwater ecology Brendan Mckie talks about the threats facing our important streams and rivers, and how we may alleviate those threats. The library offers a light lunch before the lecture.

Organiser: SLU University Library
Venue: Studio, lower level of the Teaching Building
Location: Online, Uppsala

Are we succesful in managing waterways?
Streams and rivers underpin landscape connectivity and beauty, support disproportionately high biodiversity, and deliver multiple essential ecosystem services, including water purification and multiple cultural and recreational services. Unfortunately, in draining the landscape streams and rivers are affected by human activity such as agriculture, river regulation, urbanization, invasive species and, increasingly climate change.
Spurred by the EU’s Water Framework directive and, recently, by the newly implemented EU nature restoration law, these ecosystems have been the focus of much restoration and other management activity. But how well have we succeeded in reducing pressure on streams and rivers, and restoring habitats and biodiversity?
Take part online, live or afterwards
If you are unable to attend in the studio, the lecture will be streamed live on SLU Play and on the SLU University Library’s Facebook page. The lecture will also be available to watch afterwards on SLU Play, but it will take a couple of weeks before it is published there.
Worth knowing
Worth knowing is the SLU University Library’s popular science lunchtime lecture series. Here, exciting and recent research results from SLU are presented. We offer a light lunch, and after the lecture listeners have the opportunity to ask questions.
