Urban rain gardens, nature-based solutions and designed plant communities

Join us for the next session in the Waterscapes lunch webinar series – a short, inspiring online event combining science, design, and practice. Open to researchers, practitioners, and students interested in water-related urban development and nature-based solutions.

Date: 26 November 2025

Time: 12:10 - 12:50

Participation fee: Free of charge

Organiser: SLU Urban Futures

Location: Online

Ella Uppala, industrial PhD student at SLU and landscape architect at Ramboll, will share insights from her recently defended licentiate thesis “Designed plant communities for nature-based solutions – an investigation of urban rain gardens.”

In her presentation, Ella explores how design choices, maintenance regimes, and environmental factors shape the vegetation dynamics and performance of nature-based solutions for urban stormwater management. She will also discuss future research and practice challenges – including how planting design can enhance the resilience and functionality of urban waterscapes in the face of growing urbanization.

After a 20-minute presentation, we’ll open the floor for discussion – a chance to exchange ideas across disciplines on how vegetation-based design can advance sustainable water management in cities.

Join us for an inspiring session on how thoughtful design and ecological research can work together to shape the future of urban waterscapes.

Closed for registration.
