PhD course: Non-parametric analyses applied to social dimensions data of forest research, 3 ECTS
Researchers often work with complex data that cannot be easily represented by a single numerical value or that do not follow a normal distribution. These characteristics can limit the use of conventional parametric statistical methods and require alternative approaches for data analysis.
Start date: 29 March 2027 00:00
End date: 14 April 2027 00:00
Language: Engilsh
Last day of registration: 1 March 2027
Organiser: Department of Forest Bioeconomy and Technology
Location: Umeå
The course introduces doctoral students to non-parametric statistical methods for analysing ordinal, categorical, and non-normally distributed data, highlighting their opportunities, limitations, and appropriate applications. They explore specific tests, such as the Mann–Whitney, Wilcoxon signed-rank, and Kruskal–Wallis test, through discussions, practical analyses, and interpretation of results using their own or provided datasets. Learning is supported by active participation, an oral presentation, and a written report. Sustainable development and gender equality perspectives are addressed by reflecting on how research findings can inform actions to promote more sustainable and equitable conditions.
