Challenge 2: Agricultural productivity and ecosystem functions

Balancing increased agricultural productivity with ecosystem sustainability is key. This challenge supports dialogue between scientists, practitioners, and policymakers to boost smallholder incomes while preserving vital ecosystem services.

Challenge 3: Science-based innovation and extension

A well-developed science and knowledge-based extension service is crucial for improving smallholder productivity and profitability in a sustainable way.

Challenge 4: Smallholder agriculture within transforming food systems

Rapid urbanisation offers market opportunities for smallholders. To ensure inclusive participation, policies must address existing barriers. Challenge 4 aims to translate scientific evidence into policy to support smallholder engagement in evolving urban food systems.
