Our approach

Page reviewed:  27/11/2025

We work collaboratively to build a sustainable food system in which the role of animals is central. Our diverse perspectives and experiences are a strength. They help us identify knowledge gaps, understand complex issues, and develop new solutions.

Through a range of methods and processes characterized by a high degree of collaboration among SustAinimal’s partners, we work together to drive change. On this page, you will find information about how we work, how SustAinimal is organized, and links to related research centres.

Management

The management team at SustAinimal consists of the center manager, deputy center manager, steering group, scientific management team, process team, coordinators and a communications team.

WP 2 - Forage, grazing and animals

WP2 aims to encourage increased use of natural pastures to improve the sustainability of food production while promoting and maintaining biodiversity. WP2 also aims to develop good methods for managing pastures and hay meadows to increase resource efficiency.

WP 3 - Sustainability at animal level

WP3 focuses on how breeding and feeding can work together to make animal production more sustainable, competitive, and climate-smart. WP3 investigates how genetic variation in animals affects their ability to adapt to different types of feed and how this affects production, health, feed efficiency, and climate impact.

WP 4 - System level sustainability

WP4 focuses on developing indicators and measurement tools that can help decision-makers, businesses, and farmers make animal production more sustainable, competitive, and resilient. WP4 develops indicators and tools for use at various scales, from the farm level to the national level.

Four geographic nodes

Since Sweden is a country with great geographical variations, local anchoring and collaboration are needed to ensure that SustAinimal's research is relevant and useful. That is why SustAinimal runs four regional nodes: North, West, South, and East.

Cross-functional processes

Within SustAinimal, we work with several cross-disciplinary processes that link research and practice. These processes bring together different perspectives and skills, and together we create new knowledge, new collaborations, and concrete solutions that contribute to fulfilling SustAinimal's vision.

Other related research centres

Sweden has many centers of expertise and hubs focused on development in green industries. The green clusters aim to be regional resources and partners for these knowledge organisations.
