Demonstration farms and grazing strategies in three regions.

Three grazing living labs

SustAinimal establishes Grazing Living Labs in three regions in Sweden:

  • Umeå – North node (Norrbotten and Västerbotten)
  • Uppsala and Skara – West node
  • Alnarp – South node

What is a living lab?

A living lab involves working in a real-world context from a user-centered perspective. It allows new strategies and methods to be tested in a relevant and realistic environment.

Each Grazing Living Lab includes farmers, farms, researchers and stakeholders who investigate which grazing strategies and technical applications are useful in different regions.

The Grazing Living Lab is driven by two main ideas: involving users and conducting experiments in real environments. Our living labs focus on two cases: 1) natural pastures and 2) arable pastures.

Purpose and objectives

The overall goal is to create sustainable grazing systems through innovation, dialogue, and knowledge exchange. Sweden is a long country with varying conditions for food production, with differences in climate, soil, and proximity to consumers. SustAinimal focuses on three regions: Västerbotten, Västra Götaland, and Skåne, to investigate how different geographical solutions can benefit food supply in Sweden.
