CBC at an international conference for plant pathology in Uppsala
The European Foundation for Plant Pathology (EFPP) held its recurring conference in early June, this time organised in Uppsala by the Swedish Plant Pathology Association in collaboration with SLU. SLU Centre for Biological Control (CBC) was represented both as a sponsor and as participants.
CBC contributed as a sponsor of the 14th Conference of the European Foundation for Plant Pathology, which meant that its logo was featured in the conference app and on the website. CBC also hosted an exhibition showcasing new research results in biological control from SLU. Maria Viketoft attended the conference on behalf of CBC, participating in several days of presentations and establishing new contacts with plant pathology researchers from around the world. CBC steering group members Hanna Friberg and Laura Grenville Briggs were also present.
Different perspectives in plant pathology
A highlight of the conference was the session Biocontrol and microbiome, which was held in two parts. Several of the presentations focused on biological control.
– It was truly exciting to take part in so many different perspectives within plant pathology. I usually attend more soil- or nematode-focused conferences, so it was both educational and inspiring to experience the breadth here – particularly the strong focus on fungal diseases and above-ground pathogens. The presentation on the biological control of sugar beet cyst nematode was especially interesting to listen to, says Maria Viketoft.
The conference also offered a number of well-curated plenary talks that provided a broad overview of current research and future challenges in plant protection and plant health.
