Sekab new partner in BioGlue-Centre

News published:  22/08/2025

The chemical company Sekab wants to find new bio based products, and joins the BioGlue-Centre as a partner.

Sekab is a Swedish chemical company specialized in the production of fossil-free acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate and acetic acid. The raw material is biobased ethanol, which is refined at our production site in Örnsköldsvik.

"We supply fossil-free chemicals to customers across Europe in industries such as coatings, food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and plastics – replacing fossil-based alternatives and contributing to both climate benefit and sustainable value in the chemical supply chain", says Mathilda Johansson, innovation engineer at Sekab.

BioGlue-Centre
• World-leading research environment through development of paradigm-shifting fundamental knowledge on bio-based adhesives. • Unites sectors sharing the same research questions around adhesives and adhesive bonding: furniture, packaging and construction. • Globally unique and "once in a lifetime" opportunity for a market corresponding to 25 % of all adhesives produced world-wide.

Sekab is seeing a growing demand for our fossil-free chemicals and are now exploring opportunities to expand the portfolio with new biobased products. By joining the network, Sekab aim to better understand which fossil-free solvents and monomers could be relevant for adhesive formulations, and to explore our potential role in future supply chains.

"Especially attractive context"

"The distinguished group of current Bio-Glue Centre members makes the network an especially attractive context, and we look forward to building new connections", says Mathilda Johansson.

BioGlue-Centre director professor Stergios Adamopoulos comments:

"Sekab has extensive experience on producing biobased chemicals from renewable resources. In the BioGlue, we could expand knowledge on new green products for adhesive making.”
