Charles Melnyk awarded Rising Stars in Plant Sciences 2025
Charles Melnyk, Professor of Plant Physiology at the Department of Plant Biology, and grafting expert at SLU, has been selected as one of five winners of the "Rising Stars in Plant Sciences Award" 2025. The award is co-hosted annually by Molecular Plant and its sister journal, Plant Communications.
"These exceptional researchers are recognized for their groundbreaking contributions to the field. Through their pioneering work, they are redefining what’s possible in plant science, addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing our planet. Their dedication not only advances scientific understanding but also paves the way for a more resilient and sustainable future." reads the justification on the Cell Press' home page.
Charles' work focuses on answering questions regarding the biology of plant grafting and parasitic plant interaction. His team uncovers how tissues fuse and vascular systems reconnect, identifying key molecular players in plant healing and regeneration. This research has potential to enhance agriculture, forestry, and food security by paving the way for improved grafting and regeneration across species.
