RUFS trains farmers in Mbale City on smart agronomic practices
The RUFS project, held a training workshop from 6th to 7th October 2025 at Emilna Royal Mixed Farm in Industrial City Division, Mbale City.
The workshop aimed to equip smallholder farmers with smart agronomic practices-techniques designed to boost productivity, resilience and sustainability in the face of environmental stressors.
During the training events in Mbale City, farmers were introduced to practices such as producing organic fertilisers and pesticides using locally available resources, improving soil fertility, and adopting crop management strategies that are both climate-responsive and contextually relevant. The use of peer learning, demonstration plots and participatory methods were emphasized to ensure that these practices are transferred to other farmers.

Beyond technical trainings the project is building the capacities of farmers to organise into groups, adopt business‐oriented mindsets, and engage with local governments and markets. This move aims not only to improve yields but also to elevate the role of smallholder farmers as key contributors to urban and peri-urban food systems. With Mbale City as a pilot site, the lessons are intended to scale across other districts and help improve resilience of the urban food system.
