Mini-symposium on ecosystem services in smallholder agroecosystems

News published:  21/01/2026

How can ecosystem services strengthen sustainable crop production in smallholder farming? This mini-symposium 29 January brings together international and Swedish researchers to share insights on ecosystem-based solutions for resilient agriculture.

The symposium, Harnessing ecosystem services in smallholder agroecosystems, will take place 13:00–15:30 in Tamm Hall, Ecology Centre, and will also be accessible online via Zoom. The symposium is organised by the SLU Centre for Biological Control on Thursday 29 January.

The programme brings together international and Swedish researchers with expertise in biological control, soil–crop interactions and ecosystem-based approaches to agriculture. Keynote speaker Professor Geoff Gurr (Gulbali Institute, Charles Sturt University, Australia) will share insights from research in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, focusing on how ecosystem services can strengthen smallholder agroecosystems.

From insects and fungi to locally adapted crop management

The programme also includes presentations by Ayco Tack (Stockholm University) on ecosystem services provided by insects and entomopathogenic fungi, and Kristin Persson (SLU, Skara), who will discuss options for adapting crop management to local soil conditions in smallholder systems.

The symposium is open to researchers, students and others interested in sustainable agriculture, ecosystem services and biological control.
