Prof. Andriy Getya from the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine (NUBiP) delivered a thought-provoking presentation as part of the LEARNSAVE project, funded by the Swedish Institute.

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) was honored to welcome Professor Andriy Getya from the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine (NUBiP), Kyiv, for an academic visit and invited lecture on 19 February 2026.

Prof. Getya delivered a presentation titled “Welfare of animals and well-being of people - Synergy or antagonism?”, exploring the complex and often nuanced relationship between animal welfare and human well-being. The lecture posed a compelling question at the heart of modern agriculture: are these two goals naturally aligned, or do they sometimes come into conflict?

Drawing on scientific evidence, ethical perspectives, and practical examples from livestock systems, Prof. Getya demonstrated how sustainable animal production can generate synergies that benefit both animals and society. At the same time, he frankly addressed real-world challenges where trade-offs may arise, sparking rich discussion among attendees.

“Andriy’s presentation offered both scientific depth and genuine reflection on the ethical dimensions of animal production. It was an inspiring occasion that prompted important conversations for researchers”, said Galia Zamaratskaia, the organiser of this academic visit.
