Kenya Science Translation Hub launches committee to boost research impact and policy translation

News published:  20/03/2026

The University of Nairobi has taken a significant step toward strengthening the connection between academic research and real-world impact through the launch of a new multi-stakeholder committee under its Kenya Science Translation Hub, one of three hubs in the AgriFoSe2030 programme.

Inaugurated on March 17, 2026, the committee brings together experts from academia, government, industry, and research institutions to enhance the translation of research into policy and practice, particularly in food systems and national development. Led by Professor Leonida Kerubo and chaired by Dr. Joseph Karugia, the initiative aims to address the persistent gap between strong academic output and limited societal impact.

Discussions highlighted key challenges such as food insecurity, weak research communication, and insufficient policy engagement, while emphasising solutions like developing clear frameworks, incentivising policy-oriented research, and strengthening collaboration with stakeholders including government bodies. The committee will focus on mapping policy gaps, aligning existing research, and building capacity for effective engagement, positioning itself as a strategic platform to drive sustainable development and ensure research meaningfully informs decision-making in Kenya.
