SLU strengthens collaboration with the French research institute INRAE
Vice-chancellor Maria Knutson Wedel and Philippe Mauguin, CEO of the French research institute INRAE, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 20 May 2026 in Uppsala, which aims to strengthen scientific collaboration in the areas of agriculture and forestry, food and the environment.
The agreement is based on a very active scientific partnership. With more than 50 ongoing EU projects, INRAE ((National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment) is SLU's largest international partner, also in terms of the number of co-publications. The five-year agreement covers the development of joint research projects, sharing infrastructure, organising training courses and conferences, and strengthening exchanges between young researchers.
The purpose of the agreement is to promote and strengthen collaboration between researchers and research groups in scientific and technical areas of common interest, and thereby contribute to increasing the quality and impact of research. Apart from Wageningen University and Research and Aarhus University, no other universities have similar agreements with INRAE.

During the visit, INRAE representatives and SLU deans, directors of SLU's future platforms and researchers, discussed a number of potential areas for in-depth cooperation. Discussions were held around different subject areas, such as sustainable agricultural and food systems, environmental science, ecosystem resilience, biodiversity, one-health and bioeconomy. Different forms of cooperation were also discussed, such as joint research applications, researcher mobility, sharing of infrastructure and utilisation of knowledge. Representatives from the French Embassy were also present during parts of the meetings, and proposed a joint conference on food security.
