Ramesh Vetukuri appointed new Director of the SLU Centre for Biological Control
The SLU Centre for Biological Control (CBC) has a new Director. As of June 2026, Ramesh Vetukuri, Professor at the Department of Plant Breeding in Alnarp, has taken over the role from Maria Viketoft.
Ramesh Vetukuri joined CBC in February 2023 and became Deputy Director in January 2025. His research focuses on developing sustainable strategies for crop protection and improved plant productivity.
The SLU Centre for Biological Control brings together expertise in research, education, policy development, and communication to stimulate the development and implementation of biological control. By connecting researchers with growers, advisors, industry, authorities and other stakeholders, CBC contributes to the development of sustainable plant protection solutions.
– CBC plays an important role in connecting strong science with practical needs from growers, advisors, industry, authorities and society. Biological control is not only an alternative to chemical control, but an essential component of future integrated and climate-smart plant protection strategies, says Ramesh Vetukuri.
Building on a strong foundation
As Director, he aims to further strengthen CBC as a visible and collaborative centre for biological control research at SLU. Among his priorities are fostering collaboration between researchers and stakeholders, increasing the practical impact of research, and broadening the discussion around emerging approaches such as beneficial microbes, microbiome-based solutions, RNA technologies, and integrated pest and disease management.
– I am honoured to take on this role. CBC has a strong history and many committed researchers, and I look forward to building on that foundation together with colleagues across SLU, says Ramesh Vetukuri.
Maria Viketoft takes on new role
Ramesh succeeds Maria Viketoft, who has served as Director of CBC since January 2025. During her time as Director, she worked to strengthen collaboration and promote knowledge exchange around biological control across SLU and beyond.
Maria has now taken on a new position as a nematode expert at the Swedish Veterinary Agency (SVA), where she is part of the National Reference Laboratory for the diagnosis of plant pests. CBC thanks Maria for her contributions to the Centre and wishes her all the best in her new role.
