New Rules for Student Residence Permits from 11 June

News published:  07/07/2026

The Swedish Migration Agency has amended its rules regarding residence permits for higher education. The new regulations apply to students who are granted a residence permit on or after 11 June 2026.

The amended rules entail the following changes:

  • Restricted working hours: Students will face limits on working alongside their studies during term time.
  • Higher academic requirements: The standards for academic progress and results have been raised.
  • Mandatory registration of address: It is now compulsory to register your residential address with the Migration Agency.
  • New rules for family members: New conditions have been introduced for accompanying dependants.
  • Restrictions on switching permits: It will become more difficult to switch to a different type of residence permit from within Sweden.

Existing permits remain unaffected for now

If you were granted your residence permit before 11 June 2026, you will not be affected by the restrictions on working hours during your current permit period. The stricter academic requirements and the obligation to register your address with the Migration Agency will not apply either. Please note that these new requirements will apply to you should you wish to extend your residence permit in the future.
