SLU and Ukrainian universities in collaboration
The 14th of October, SLU Global held a workshop with the aim of expanding the exchange between SLU and Ukrainian universities. The workshop was about soil-related challenges and was organized by the Department of Soil and Environment. About 40 people took part on site and online.
The participants of the workshop included researchers from six Ukrainian institutions and from many SLU departments. One of the main goals of the workshop was to create contacts and find common ground for joint research projects.
Presentations by Ukrainian and Swedish researchers were interspersed with discussions on challenges around plant nutrient supply and increased circulation, protecting the soil under the influence of both intensive agricultural production and war, and promoting sustainability in cropping systems. One of the main goals of the workshop was to create contacts and find common ground for joint research projects.
− In a situation with soils that are polluted, compacted and eroded by the war, it is a challenge to combine work with both long-term challenges related to agriculture and the environment itself and those related to the impact of the current war. For Ukraine, it is also important to prepare for EU entry by harmonizing for example soil monitoring with EU directives, says Oksana Valetska at the Department of Soil and Environment, who led the workshop.
During the workshop, the needs the coutries share to increase the recycling of plant nutrients, increase carbon sequestration, clean soils from hazardous substances and to use remote sensing for environmental monitoring and more efficient agriculture were discussed.
