Nikiforos Alygizakis

I am Assistant Professor of Environmental Organic Chemistry at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). My research focuses on developing analytical and data-driven approaches to detect, identify and prioritise contaminants of emerging concern in the environment.

Using high-resolution mass spectrometry and advanced chemical screening, I investigate the occurrence and fate of contaminants across environmental media and develop approaches for the early detection and prioritisation of emerging chemical threats.

My research focuses on four interconnected areas:

1. Development of non-target and suspect screening methodologies using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) for the detection, identification and characterisation of known and unknown chemicals in complex environmental samples.
2. Investigation of the occurrence, fate and environmental behaviour of contaminants across environmental media, including their sources, transport, transformation, bioaccumulation and transfer through food chains.
3. Development of environmental early warning systems (EWS) for the timely detection and assessment of emerging chemical threats by integrating advanced chemical screening, environmental monitoring and data-driven approaches.
4. Development of chemical prioritisation methodologies integrating occurrence, exposure, persistence, bioaccumulation, hazard and other lines of evidence to identify contaminants of potential environmental concern and support monitoring, risk assessment and chemicals management.
