Rabiu Aminu received a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Communication) from the University of East London, UK, in 2014 and an MSc in Electrical Engineering (Telecommunication) from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya, in 2018.
Research interests: Image Processing, Machine Learning and Embedded Systems Design.
Research
Development of machine learning techniques for a pest control robot
Advances in modern image processing ('machine vision') in both industry and agricultural technology have already enabled novel methods such as selective weed control, which have now even made the leap into initial practical applications. Such an approach is currently lacking in the field of pest insect control. Deep learning offers significant advantages in the evaluation and classification of data, for example, from plant monitoring and automated visual animal observation. Therefore, as part of the digitalization approach, this project is developing AI together with advanced statistical models to strengthen digitalization approaches under the conditions of organic farming.
However, no solution is currently available for the detection of pest insects, despite their importance in organic farming (aphids, Colorado potato beetles, etc.). This work package aims to develop an advanced methodology based on digital image processing, machine learning, and high-performance data transmission that specifically detects both pests and beneficial organisms. This highly innovative work package will demonstrate how a previously unsolved problem in organic farming can be solved through the use of modern digital technologies.
