Dr. Srinivas Akula är forskare vid SLU med fokus på jämförande immunologi, särskilt astma och allergi hos människa och häst.

Presentation

I am a researcher at SLU specializing in comparative immunology, with a particular focus on asthma and allergy in both humans and horses. My research aims to identify shared and species-specific immunological mechanisms underlying allergic diseases. By combining molecular approaches and interdisciplinary collaboration, I strive to contribute to improved diagnostics and treatment strategies in both human and veterinary medicine.

Research

My research focuses on comparative immunology, with an emphasis on asthma and allergy in both humans and horses. By investigating immunological similarities and differences across species, I contribute to a deeper understanding of allergic diseases within a One Health framework, recognizing the interconnectedness of human and animal health. I use techniques such as transcriptomics, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and bioinformatic analysis to study immune regulation and its role in inflammatory processes. The goal is to develop new diagnostic and treatment strategies relevant to both human and veterinary medicine.

Teaching

I have been teaching immunology to master's students at Uppsala University since 2015, focusing on allergy, asthma, and comparative immunology across species. At SLU, I also assist in the biochemistry course for veterinary students. I supervise thesis projects in immunology and related fields, and aim to create a research-informed and interdisciplinary learning environment. My teaching integrates a One Health perspective and is grounded in current research methodologies such as transcriptomics, flow cytometry, and bioinformatics.

Educational credentials

PhD in Molecular Immunology, Uppsala University, Sweden (Dec 2014 – Jul 2019)
Thesis: The Mast Cell Transcriptome and the Evolution of Granule Proteins and Fc Receptors

MSc in Molecular Biotechnology, Uppsala University, Sweden (Aug 2010 – Nov 2014)

B.Tech in Biotechnology, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, India (Aug 2004 – Jun 2008)

Publications

I have authored over 44 peer-reviewed publications in immunology, with a focus on mast cell biology, allergy, and asthma in humans and horses. My work has advanced the understanding of granule enzymes, Fc receptors, and evolutionary aspects of the immune system.
