My research interest is patterns in aquatic biodiversity on global, regional and local scales and how such patterns are influenced by changes in the environment

Presentation

I am associate professor and deputy head at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment and head of the Ecology and Biodiversity Division.

Research

Research-wise, the focus is on phytoplankton, algal blooms and aquatic food webs and the development of DNA-based methods to study aquatic organisms at different scales and adapt them for use in large scale monitoring. I work closely to the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management and develop assessment methods for water management.

I have a large Focus on Mälaren, in a collaboration with Lake Mälaren's water conservation association, to facilitate the exchange between research and social interests around the lake.

Current projects:

  • VR-project: Global change depletes pelagic food webs in northern lakes (Web4Food)
  • ESA-project: Novel ecosystem and biodiversity indicators for the aquatic environment based on time series analysis of Sentinel Expansion Missions (AQUATIME)

Research projects

Environment analysis

I was for thirteen years coordinator for the Lakes and watercourses programme. Now, my contribution is mainly via environmental monitoring projects such as Focus on Mälaren and National trend lakes programme.

I also lead the laboratory that analyzes phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthic fauna, algae and other aquatic plants for mainly national monitoring.

Teaching

Mainly on two courses (in Swedish): Energi och miljö (Energy and the Environment) and Energisystemens miljöpåverkan (Environmental Impacts of Energy Systems for civil engineer students).

I regularly supervise bachelor and master projects, usually with focus on Lake Mälaren.
