I am a research-driven and results-oriented medical entomologist with experience in the biology of vector-borne diseases, focusing on interactions between vectors and pathogens, chemical ecology, and the landscape ecology of disease vectors.

Presentation

As a medical entomologist, I combine field entomology, lab experiments, and spatial ecological analysis to study the biological and environmental factors behind pathogen transmission. My professional career reflects a strong commitment to interdisciplinary research, bridging entomology, ecology, molecular biology, and public health.

I'm especially motivated by research questions that require integrating multiple scales, from molecular interactions within the vector to landscape-level factors affecting disease risk. I value methodological precision, transparent scientific communication, and collaborative research environments that bring together diverse expertise.

My broader goal is to contribute to evidence-based public health innovations, especially in regions where environmental changes, land-use dynamics, and shifts in biodiversity impact vector ecology and disease occurrence.

Research

My research focuses on the ecological and mechanistic foundations for the transmission of vector-borne diseases. I examine how vector physiology, nutritional ecology, microbial interactions, and environmental heterogeneity shape vector competence and pathogen dynamics.

Key research areas include:

Environmental changes and disease emergence: assessing how climate variations, altered land use, and ecological disturbances impact vector populations and the potential for disease transmission.

Vector-pathogen interactions: exploring infection dynamics and factors affecting vector competence.

Chemical ecology of disease vectors: studies chemical mediated of host-vector interactions that influence vector behavior and fitness.

In these areas, I use a combination of field sampling, GIS-based spatial modeling, lab analyses, and ecological experiments to generate knowledge that can be applied in practice in monitoring and control programs.

Teaching

I have two years of experience teaching at the university level in the Department of Biological Sciences at Mekelle University, where I taught both basic and advanced courses in ecology, conservation biology, and zoology. My teaching philosophy emphasizes conceptual clarity, scientific rigor, and the integration of field and laboratory perspectives to give students a solid foundation in biology.

In addition to my university teaching, I work as an international course instructor for the program “Biology of Vector-Borne Diseases,” organized by the Institute for Health in the Human Ecosystem (IHHE) at the University of Idaho. In this role, I contribute to a global educational platform that brings together participants from multiple countries, focusing on the ecological, molecular, and environmental aspects of vector-borne disease transmission. My teaching combines lectures, guided discussions, and applied case studies to promote interdisciplinary learning and professional development.
