Ragnar Jonsson

Dr. Ragnar Jonsson is a forest economist with particular expertise in the international market for forest products and the impact on the forest-based sector of key drivers of change, such as demographic development trends, climate change, policy instruments, and geopolitical developments. He has worked five years at the Department of Energy and Technology, primarily as regards the role of the forest-based sector in climate change. Immediately prior to this, Ragnar served as a scientific project officer at the European Commission Joint Research centre (JRC) for eight years. In addition to participating in studies that informed policy formulation, he contributed to the creation of an ecnomic forest sector model, the Global Forest Trade Model.
Research
Ragnar Jonsson is the project leader for the project Robust strategies for developing the forest sector in a turbulent world. He led a synthesis study that resulted in a list of trends and drivers of change relevant to the future development of the Swedish forest-based sector, and, in addition, a scientific article https://doi.org/10.3390/f17010141. Ragnar also leads the work on modelling the relationship between the Swedish forest-based sector and the external world. Of particular importance here is the phenomenon of market-effects leakage, i.e., in this context the extent to which changes in Swedish harvest levels and associated supply of forest products, mediated by trade, lead to offsetting changes abroad. A study in this regard, concerning sawnwood, has been undertaken and a manuscript has been submitted to a scientific journal. Ragnar will also lead the work on developing policy recommendations, based on stakeholder assessments of the quantitative scenarios created.
