I conduct research and teaching in forest soil science, with a focus on understanding soil and plant processes that are essential for the functioning of forest ecosystems.

Presentation

I am trained as a forest scientist and currently serve as Professor at the department where I completed my undergraduate education. I earned my PhD in Environmental Science at Umeå University, where I later held a professorship before returning to the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). As a researcher, I have experienced several major failures, but also received some research distinctions, including a Wallenberg Academy Fellowship and a scholarship from the King Carl XVI Gustaf 50th Anniversary Foundation for Science, Technology and the Environment. I currently serve on the Programme Board and Faculty Board of the Faculty of Forest Sciences, as well as on SLU’s Library Council.

Research

My research mainly aims to elucidate how biological and chemical soil processes influence key forest ecosystem functions. These include forest productivity, carbon sequestration, biodiversity and climate regulation. I also have a research interest in understanding the fate and effects of pollutants in high latitude ecosystems.

Teaching

I teach courses including Forest Ecosystem Ecology (BI1443), Forest History – Human Utilisation and Vegetation Dynamics (SV0027), Forests and Landscapes of Southern Sweden (SV0044), and Project-Based Advanced Course in Soil Science at the Department of Forest Ecology and Management (MV0222). I am the course coordinator for the latter course, which is tailored to the individual student’s academic interests.
