Presentation
I am a junior lecturer in ethology and a PhD student at the Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare. I have worked at SLU since the autumn of 2013, initially in Skara, but moved to Uppsala and Ultuna before the autumn semester of 2014. I have mainly worked with teaching and as deputy head of department with responsibility for undergraduate education. Since spring 2024, I am also a part-time PhD student, so my time is now divided between teaching and research. In terms of subject area, I find the behaviour and welfare of zoo animals the most interesting. When it comes to teaching, I enjoy the interaction with students and the development of teaching modules and courses, which I find the most rewarding part of my job.
Research
I am a part-time PhD student in the project “Animal encounters in zoos – the effect on learning, conservation and animal welfare.” I am also involved in various projects concerning the behaviour and welfare of zoo animals. My Master’s thesis (60 credits) focused on how visitors affect zoo animals, and I supervise some Bachelor’s students in that subject area.
Teaching
I am course leader and/or examiner for a couple of courses within the Ethology and Animal Welfare programme. I teach across all "animal programs" at Ultuna, primarily in ethology and animal welfare, focusing on how animal husbandry and handling affect animal behaviour and welfare, among other topics. As I am also the department’s director of undergraduate studies, I have an overarching pedagogical responsibility. The courses I am currently responsible for are Ethology and Animal Welfare and the distance course Zoo Animal Behaviour. I also teach, for example, ethology for veterinary nursing students in their first course.
Background
I received my Bachelor’s degree in Biology from SLU through the Ethology and Animal Welfare programme in Skara. I then completed my Master’s degree in Biology at Linköping University within the programme Applied Ethology and Animal Biology. In addition, I have taken courses in pedagogy. After my studies, I combined my work at SLU for a few years with seasonal and project-based employment at zoos.
